Day 1 CPT programs — the honest picture.
Day 1 CPT lets you work from the first day of classes. It's valuable for mid-career professionals who can't pause income. It also has real risks — which is why we only recommend a curated list of programs that have passed our due diligence.
Curricular Practical Training — from day one.
CPT is work authorization tied to an F-1 program's curriculum. Traditional programs require one academic year (two full-time semesters) before CPT is available. Some SEVP-certified schools offer programs where CPT is integral from the first day — hence “Day 1 CPT.”
Day 1 CPT is legal when the program is structured properly: the work must be directly related to your field of study, it must be a required component of the degree, and it must be authorized by your Designated School Officer (DSO).
Three profiles where it makes sense.
Mid-career professionals
You can't pause income for 9 months of classroom time. Day 1 CPT lets you continue working while upskilling formally.
H-1B lottery losers
You need to stay in-status and keep working. A Day 1 CPT program bridges you while you re-enter the H-1B pool.
Entrepreneurs and founders
You're running a company and need to maintain status. Some Day 1 CPT programs explicitly support entrepreneurial CPT placements.
The cases where we won't recommend it.
- You want a traditional academic experience. Day 1 CPT programs are professional, not research-oriented. If you're aiming at a Ph.D. or a top-ranked master's, this isn't it.
- Your employer will not cooperate. Day 1 CPT requires a CPT offer letter from your employer. Employers unfamiliar with F-1 sometimes refuse to provide one.
- You're planning to use Day 1 CPT continuously for 4+ years. Using CPT full-time for 12+ months disqualifies you from OPT. That math matters.
- The school's program design is questionable. Some Day 1 CPT programs have been the subject of USCIS and ICE scrutiny. We filter these out.
Our due-diligence checklist.
SEVP certification in good standing
Confirmed via SEVIS with no recent sanctions, warnings, or withdrawal of certification.
Accreditation
Regionally or nationally accredited by a recognized accrediting body. Many Day 1 CPT schools are legitimate regional schools; we exclude those that aren't.
Program structure review
We review the syllabus, degree requirements, and CPT integration to ensure it meets USCIS standards.
Alumni outcomes check
We track graduates' OPT approval rates and subsequent H-1B outcomes. If the numbers are weak, we don't recommend.
DSO communication quality
A good DSO is the difference between a smooth experience and a nightmare. We only work with responsive, knowledgeable DSOs.

We don't publish it publicly — the list changes as schools come in and out of good standing. We share it during the Status Review once we understand your situation.
